The Plastic Injection Molding Process
The plastic injection molding process involves injecting liquid plastic resin into a mold tool under significant pressure. The mold tool can consist of a single cavity or multiple cavities, allowing for the production of an indefinite number of parts. Once the carefully designed and manufactured mold tools are in place, the molding process follows these fundamental steps:
Pellet Preparation
Raw plastic resin pellets are obtained, dried to the appropriate moisture content, and can be blended with pigments or master batch colorants to achieve the desired color for the design.
Hopper Loading
The dried pellets are poured into the machine's hopper. A reciprocating screw inside the barrel of the machine transports and heats these pellets simultaneously.
Melting and Mixing
Within the barrel, the pellets are thoroughly mixed and heated until they reach a fully molten state, forming the liquid resin.
Injection
The heated mold automatically closes, and the molten resin, under significant pressure, is injected through a gate into the mold cavity.
Cooling
Raw plastic resin pellets are obtained, dried to the appropriate moisture content, and can be blended with pigments or master batch colorants to achieve the desired color for the design.
Ejection
The mold opens, and the finished part is ejected, initiating a new cycle.
Advantages Of Plastic Injection Molding
Plastic injection molding offers a multitude of advantages, making it a preferred manufacturing method. Key benefits include the capacity to produce large volumes of parts rapidly, high surface quality, a diverse selection of resins, color flexibility, and the longevity of durable tooling. Frequently Asked Questions About Plastic Injection Molding
What is the injection molding process?
Raw plastic pellets are dried and, if needed, mixed with coloring agents. After heating and mixing in the machine, the resin becomes semi-liquid. It is then injected underhigh pressure through a nozzle into the mold's gate and runner system. The resin flls the cavity, takes the shape of the part, cools, and is ejected for the next cycle.
What are the advantages of injection molding?
Plastic injection molding is the fastest and most cost-effective method for manufacturing large quantities of finished plastic parts once the tool is made. Molded parts exhibit excellent surface finishes with reliable and repeatable dimensional tolerances. Various resins are available to suit diverse applications.
How long does it take to make an injection mold tool?
Depending on the design complexity and potential heat treatment, a plastic injection mold tool can be produced in five days to two weeks.
What are the main cost drivers for plastic injection molding?
For small volumes, the cost of a plastic injection mold tool can be a significant percentage of the total order. However, this cost can be spread over larger volumes, making it less significant. Larger volumes are mainly influenced by the cost of plastic resin and cycle times.

WINGTAT Injection Molding Service FAQ:
How long does it take to make an injection mold tool?
The timeline for crafting an injection mold tool is influenced by its intricacy and the type of material used. While simpler shapes from softer steel like P20 may take less than a week, more complex designs or those requiring harder steels might extend the manufacturing process to three weeks or more. This extended duration ensures meticulous attention to detail and precision in crafting the tool.
What should you expect from a plastic mold manufacturer?
A reputable plastic mold manufacturer adheres to stringent quality standards. This includes positive material identification for all incoming raw materials and meticulous control at every stage of production to ensure process repeatability. ISO certification is a testament to their unwavering commitment to excellence in the manufacturing process.
How can I reduce mold costs?
While the temptation might be to opt for a less expensive tool, it's crucial to recognize that cost-cutting measures on the tool often result in compromised quality, reduced durability, looser tolerances, and an inferior surface finish. True savings come from long-term efficiency, fast cycle times, and maintaining process stability, especially as production volumes increase.
